Peace is Possible
Our meeting has a billboard up on the highway.
“Peace is Possible,” it says. And in smaller letters along the bottom, “Paid for by the Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia (Quakers).”
I like it. It’s in a seedy section on the western side of South Philadelphia, near the oil refineries, on Interstate-76 by the Vare Avenue exit. Vare is probably known best by those who listen to the traffic reports as a place where traffic often backs up on I-76 westbound.
So for two weeks, people stuck in traffic get to meditate on the metaphysics of peace.

I had little to do with this project, actually.
The idea started before the elections, with a suggestion that we put up a billboard asking “Is War the Answer?” with a tag-line “Vote on November 7th,” and the full “Paid for by …” statement included at the bottom.
We didn’t have time to work out the legal ramifications (Church-State, etc.) but it looked like it might be somewhat risky to do it. So after the election we settled on “Peace is Possible,” with the dove adding a holiday twist. Either way, it relates to the “intersection” issues that are the meat and potatoes of this blog, so I’m happy to be able to report on it now.
